Workshops, Editing, and Consulting Services

Calling all aspiring writers!

Do you have a novel, some short stories, a screenplay, or a memoir you’d like feedback on? Would you like the support of a writers’ group or the structure of a deadline? How about help drafting or polishing a query letter to submit to agents? Do you have questions about publishing? Or about writing for TV/film?

We’d love to help! Please join us, author Willa C. Richards, and author and screenwriter J.M. Holmes, for four-week sessions of Writers’ Workshop Intensives. We’ll read one another’s work and meet once a week to provide feedback on your work in progress. All prose writers– fiction, nonfiction, memoir, screenwriting– are welcome. All stages welcome. Your project does not need to be done to participate. 

If you’ve been waiting to return to a project, wanting to start writing again, or hoping to get invaluable feedback on your work, this is your chance! This will be a warm, encouraging, inclusive, and inspiring environment. Please join us!

Where: Hybrid of in-person and remote depending on participants’ locations/availability. Willa and J.M. are located in Altadena, California.

Cost: The base price is $400 for the entire course. This cost includes light editing of your ms and a personalized letter with actionable feedback from either Willa or J.M*. Sliding scale admission is available based on need. EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT: 25% off to the first three people who sign up.

About us:  

Willa C. Richards is a fiction writer and poet from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She holds an MFA in Fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has over five years of teaching experience, has led workshops for undergraduates and graduates, and loves talking about writing! Her work has appeared in The Paris Review, The Kenyon Review, Electric Lit and Lit Hub. Her first novel is The Comfort of Monsters. It was listed as a NYT “Best Crime Novel of 2021”. She is at work on her second novel. 

J.M. Holmes was born in Denver and raised in Rhode Island. His literary prizes include: Burnett Howe prize for fiction at Amherst College, the Henfield prize for literature, and a Pushcart prize. He's a Fellowship Graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop . He’s worked in educational outreach in Iowa, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. His work has appeared in publications such as The Paris Review, White Review, The New Yorker, HOW Journal, the Missouri Review, Gettysburg, and GQ among others. His debut story collection How Are You Going to Save Yourself was published with Little, Brown in 2018 and with Sceptre in the UK. He has written for Showtime’s television series City On a Hill and the AppleTV series Swagger. He is currently at work on his first novel.
